The Canterbury Journey

Canterbury Cathedral remained an active visitor attraction and place of worship throughout our works.

The Canterbury Journey

The installation of the site contractor compound facility is the first step to providing a better environment for visitors and improving the setting of the Cathedral and the other historic buildings that surround it.

To enable the development of the various streams of The Canterbury Journey, we created a new Compound on the South Nave Green.

The compound consists of a level deck and accommodation for the Cathedral’s skilled craftsmen. The accommodation was created in the form of a single-storey timber framed sectional building which will house mess, office and changing facilities.

Also included in our works was the creation a new temporary Welcome Centre and Canterbury Cathedral Shop Store to maintain the visitor experience ahead of subsequent phases to deliver permanent facilities.

Canterbury Cathedral is a Grade 1 Listed Building of International importance so required special consideration and care reflecting its historic importance and religious prominence. Work were therefore undertaken in accordance with the well-developed Canterbury Cathedral Contractors Code of Practice.

Choosing a contractor with a good cultural fit with was an important part of the selection criteria. As a long-established Canterbury based business, we were able to demonstrate this and an appreciation for the important role the Cathedral plays in the prosperity and culture of our city.
